The most surprising aspect has been the realization that the gap between academic research and industry engineering is smaller than I thought, but the focus is fundamentally different. In industry, the goal is often "make it work, make it fast, make it reliable." In academia, the challenge is often "make it provable, make it generalizable, and make it explore the unknown."
