Pre-med track while majoring in Biology - manageable?

I'm planning to be pre-med with a biology major. Everyone keeps saying it's really hard and competitive. Is it possible to maintain a good GPA while also doing clinical volunteering and research? How do you manage your time? Any tips from current pre-med students?
